GOODWOOD + MERCEDES BENZ + Gerry Judah

GOODWOOD + MERCEDES + Gerry Judah
Text from Gerry Judah's web:

Mercedes-Benz can trace its motorsport origins back through three centuries, to 1894, when Daimler engines powered the world’s first winners on the rough roads of France. It’s appropriate then, that the 2014 sculpture at Goodwood Festival of Speed represents that enormous span through thirteen decades. Soaring 26 metres over Goodwood House, this 160-tonne steel sculpture is 90 metres long and was created by artist Gerry Judah.
It was 80 years ago when the legend of the German racing “Silver Arrows” was born. Stripped of their lead-based white paint, the 1934 Mercedes-Benz W25 – like the example installed here - won at its first outing at the notorious Nürburgring Nordschleife, with Manfred von Brauchitsch at the wheel – and since then, the company’s works cars have always been silver. The other Silver Arrow soaring overhead is the MERCEDES AMG PETRONAS Formula One Team’s F1 W04. This car, chassis number 04, was raced in 15 Grands Prix in 2013 by Lewis Hamilton, most notably to five Pole positions; to victory in the Hungarian Grand Prix; and to third place podiums in Malaysia, China and Belgium.

GOODWOOD + 50 Years of PORSCHE 911 + Gerry Judah

GOODWOOD + 50 Years of PORSCHE 911+ Gerry Judah

The structure features three iconic generations of Porsche 911, secured onto the end of 35 metre-long hollow steel plates that have been welded together. It weighs just over 22 tonnes and each leg slims down at the base, becoming narrow enough for a person to wrap their hands around.
"I had to create a sculpture which personifies the energy and excitement of the car and the Festival of Speed," Judah told Dezeen. "The 911 is a fantastic shape, so I had to think 'You can't deconstruct or embellish it'; so in this context the sculpture had to provide the right platform for the car to soar up and shine in the sky".

LOTUS + Gerry Judah + Goodwood Festival of Speed

Designer Gerry Judah has created this white knotted sculpture of a race track for car brand Lotus at Goodwood Festival of Speed, which took place in West Sussex.
The structure features six historic Lotus Formula 1 cars secured onto 150 metres of winding road.
The hollow, 60-tonne sculpture is made from sheets of steel that have been joined at the edges to create triangular sections, which are self-supporting and require no internal frame.
This construction technique was used in tribute to Lotus founder and designer Colin Chapman (1928-1982) who introduced the monocoque chassis to automobile racing, enabling the chassis and body of a car to be made in one piece.

The sculpture itself is six historic Lotus Formula 1: the Lotus 32B (Jim Clark 1965), Lotus 49B (Graham Hill 1968), Lotus 72E (Emerson Fittipaldi 1973), Lotus 79 (Mario Andretti 1978), Lotus 99T (Ayrton Senna 1987) and the latest Lotus F1 Team challenger.

La propia escultura son seis Formula 1 historicos de Lotus:  Lotus 32B (Jim Clark 1965), Lotus 49B (Graham Hill 1968), Lotus 72E (Emerson Fittipaldi 1973), Lotus 79 (Mario Andretti 1978), Lotus 99T (Ayrton Senna 1987) y el ultimo LotusF1

Gerry Judah + JAGUAR E-Type

This 28 metre-high steel sculpture of the Jaguar E-Type car was designed by Gerry Judah for the Goodwood Festival of Speed, which took place in Sussex, UK, summer 2011.
Made from half a kilometre of steel tubing with a diameter of 1.2 metres, the sculpture weighs over 175 tonnes and shows the car balanced on its front bumper.
The iconic Jaguar E-Type was first unveiled fifty years ago at the Geneva Motor Show.

Very few cars in history have matched the allure of the Jaguar E-Type. The sensational Malcolm Sayer design, 150 mph performance and race-winning heritage gave it a unique combination of beauty, speed and credibility. The E-Type was an overnight sensation when it was unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show in 1961. Despite changing fashions and the passage of time, our fascination with the E-Type is as strong today as it was 50 years ago, and those swooping curves are still as breathtaking as they were when Enzo Ferrari described it as “the most beautiful car ever made.”
